RollsPack is proud to have received Gold recognition at the 2026 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards for the Australia Post Smart Circular Satchel.

Developed through a collaboration between Australia Post, iQRenew, RollsPack and Signet, the Smart Circular Satchel received Gold in the Innovations in Resource Recovery area of the Sustainable Packaging Design category.

The award recognises the work behind creating a practical circular packaging solution made entirely from recycled Australian household soft plastics.

Creating a practical circular solution

The Smart Circular Satchel was developed as part of Australia Post’s National Circular Textiles Pilot. The pilot explored how Australia Post’s existing network could make it easier for Australians to return unwanted clothing for recycling.

Customers participating in the pilot received a Smart Circular Satchel with their R.M.Williams order. Once their clothing reached the end of its useful life, they could place the items inside the satchel and return them through the Australia Post network.

The returned clothing was then sorted and processed for textile recovery, helping keep valuable materials in circulation and reducing the amount of clothing sent to landfill.

For the project to support genuine circular outcomes, the packaging also needed to be considered. The goal was to create a satchel from locally recovered materials that could perform reliably within a postal environment and be recycled again through the pilot’s controlled recovery system.

From household soft plastics to a finished satchel

The Smart Circular Satchel was made from 100% Australian post-consumer recycled household soft plastics.

The recovered plastics were collected through Australian soft-plastic recovery programs and processed by iQRenew into recycled low-density polyethylene resin. Signet then used the recycled resin to manufacture the film required for the satchel.

RollsPack transformed the film into the finished Smart Circular Satchels, contributing its printing and converting experience to the project.

Producing a satchel from post-consumer material required careful attention to quality, consistency and performance. The finished packaging needed to be lightweight while still providing the strength and durability required to carry clothing safely through the Australia Post network.

The result was a mono-material satchel made through an Australian recycling and manufacturing supply chain.

RollsPack’s role in the project

RollsPack’s role was to convert the recycled film into a functional, finished mailing satchel.

This involved ensuring the satchel met the practical requirements of the pilot, including its size, construction, sealing, print quality and overall durability. It also needed to be straightforward for customers to use and suitable for processing through the postal network.

Working with recycled materials can present different manufacturing considerations compared with conventional virgin materials. The project required close collaboration across the supply chain to ensure the recovered plastic could be processed into a satchel without losing the performance required for its intended use.

RollsPack worked alongside the project partners to help turn the recycled film into packaging that was both practical and aligned with the circular goals of the pilot.

How the circular system worked

The Smart Circular Satchel brought several stages of the circular economy together in one practical system.

Australian household soft plastics were collected and processed into recycled resin. The resin was then made into film before RollsPack converted it into the finished satchel.

The satchel was supplied to customers so they could return unwanted clothing through Australia Post. After the garments were removed for sorting and textile recovery, the used satchels could be collected and recycled again through the pilot.

This approach gave recovered household soft plastics a useful new purpose while creating a convenient return option for unwanted clothing.

It also demonstrated the importance of considering the complete system around a package, including where the material comes from, how the packaging is manufactured, how it performs during use and what happens to it afterwards.

Gold recognition at the PIDA Awards

The Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards recognise packaging innovation and design across Australia and New Zealand.

The Smart Circular Satchel was awarded Gold for Innovations in Resource Recovery within the Sustainable Packaging Design category.

The recognition highlights how packaging can play a practical role in broader circular economy programs. Rather than looking only at the amount of recycled material used, the project considered how the packaging could work within a complete recovery system.

The satchel combined 100% post-consumer recycled content, local manufacturing, a lightweight mono-material design and a controlled return pathway.

Supporting the future of circular packaging

The Smart Circular Satchel shows that Australian household soft plastics can be recovered and turned into functional packaging that meets real performance requirements.

It also shows why collaboration is essential. Creating circular packaging requires different parts of the supply chain to work together, from material recovery and processing through to manufacturing, distribution, use and end-of-life collection.
